12th Annual Labyrinth Society Gathering
New Harmonies in the Labyrinth
With a background of Wabash Valley Indian culture, the Harmonist millenarian community of 1814, and Robert Owen’s social utopia in communal living of 1825, New Harmony has strong spiritual and intellectual foundations. Today New Harmony (pop. 950) serves as a place of retreat and enjoys a vibrant arts culture. It is known for its Harmonist labyrinth started around 1815 and a pink granite Chartres labyrinth laid in 1989: it also has historic Harmonist structures as well as a pair of world-class modern buildings called the Roofless Church and the New Harmony Atheneum.
This year’s theme “New Harmonies in the Labyrinth” inspires attendees and presenters to think outside the circle and explore new ways to use the labyrinth. To precipitate this theme, the following workshops and events are being planned:
- Traditional Danish maypole dancing in the labyrinth with Celtic jig music
- Equestrian labyrinths, culminating in a reenactment of the seven-horse Troytown Ride
- The USI New Harmony Artist in Residence, Jim Buchanan, will make light and water labyrinths for an exhibition in the Contemporary Art Gallery
- Exhibition of Labyrinth quilts
- An invitation to build temporary labyrinths in New Harmony
- A night pilgrimage to the Harmonist Labyrinth and Indian Mound
- Guided walking tour of Historic New Harmony, Visiting sites and museums of Harmonist and Owenite Utopias
- Leisure time with friends, new and old, for sharing and networking: walking river trails, antiquing, relaxing in swimming pool & hot tub, local bars and eateries
